Get your union CSIS files...

This link might be of interest to some MFD members...

"All across Canada, in cities and towns and in the
countryside, the RCMP monitored unions and labour organizations. Virtually all unions were monitored as the government feared any organized opposition. The RCMP would even break & enter premises in order to gather material for the inclusion in their files on legal unions."

For $5 you can ask to see how many files the government (Or I should say their 'intelligence' branch - CSIS) and RCMP have on the MFD and/or UFCW.

I did a check on both IWW and CUPE local 1004 (Vancouver) and it came back with (Approx. 1350 pages - IWW, 100 pages - CUPE 1004). To get these files you then have to pay the government to look them up and photocopy them (for the above its $395). I'm not sure if these are yearly files are all years combined...

email mkhan@archives.ca (Marta Khan - Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator) if your interested.

Your tax dollars at work (and government says it doesn't have money...ya right!)

CSIS andPeace Groups (inlcudes huge partial listing of peace groups monitored).

Did you actually buy the files?
If so, what kind of info did they contain?

We could probably get a whack of interesting news items from one (or more) of these reports!

Hmmm.......

Hell No...

It would be such a waste of cash...if you think about it its just a yearbook of what you did...ha, ha. Really though its a lot of MONEY to look at YOUR OWN FILES. I wouldn't give the government and their gestapo the time of day.

Although if your an organizer that would mean companies could get some of that info to thwart an organizing drive, start a blacklist, etc. There goes Government subsidizing business again...instead of businesses sending out spies to start their own blacklist they just get one the government has already made...

It depends whats in those files??? I'm sure names are blotted out but you never know...

Personally, I'd be flattered if CSIS had a file on MFD.
That would be too funny!
I'm going to have to check that out someday, just for giggles.
