The Next Step
Today we are happy to announce that our new home on the internet is up, operational, and looks pretty spiffy to boot.
For those not in the know, back in November of 2005, at the end of a 5 year legal dispute with the UFCW, the Supreme Court of British Columbia decided that we didn't have the right to use the domain name ufcw.net for our web site.
In the months since, we developed a plan to deal with the decision and kept two specific goals in mind:
- Rebirth: a fresh break out of the MFD box. An opportunity to expand our horizons and open the door to a broader range of topics and ideas.
- Create a legacy: ensure that the content that's been produced and published at ufcw.net remains accessible for the years to come.
Today, we're born again.
We hereby cordially invite you to point your browser to http://www.uncharted.ca and get nestled-up with us in our new digs. There you'll find all the amentities you've come to expect and maybe a few that you didn't.
In the coming weeks we'll also be launching the MFD Archive, a searchable and browsable repository containing every bit of content ever posted by anyone here at ufcw.net over the last 5 years. We'll be posting a notice here and at uncharted to announce the launch of the archive.
To facillitate the creation of the archive we will not be posting any more news or articles here and the forums will be locked at midnight this coming Sunday (February 5th).
ufcw.net will be going offline permanently at midnight on Friday, March 2nd.
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed or participated in ufcw.net over the years. We sincerely appreciate your patronage and we look forward to more of it at uncharted.ca.
Congratulations on the move. But, dang, I'm just finishing up an article about the 2005 AUD Best Rank-and-File Website Contest and now the feedback on MFD is irrelevant. (Did I mention that MFD took 2nd place?)
Will update links. See you on uncharted terrain.
Thanks Matt and AUD.
MfD is still relevant until March 2nd if that helps and then of course the archives. And thanks to the nature of the e-press, the ink never dries - you can edit after?

Sorry! Had to do it though, you know, that whole "judicial process" and everything.

Sweet, thanks!
We're #2! We try harder!
That's wonderful news Matt and thanks for the heads-up.
The feedback won't be irrelevant at all. The site will live on, fully archived, forever. The feedback will be useful to other democracy-seeking unionists who are building or renovating their own websites and to us also as we move ahead with uncharted.ca.
The new site was built on a lot of knowledge garnered from the current MFD site - so it's all very relevant and quite an honour too.
Can't wait to read all about it.
Wow, how cool is that?
AUD and it's supporters are something else! Can't wait to read the article Matt!
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm gonna lose my post count...
Congrats on the move.
Sucks about the court decision.
Bigger and better things...
I personally think there oughta' be a prize for the post count.

You've already won! You get to pay the bills!
Awesome - then I get to pick the prize too. I'm thinking something nice from Ikea.

slek:
Congratulations for the new website.
Will the MFD Archive be safe from successful legal challenges?
Ahhhhhh!! I am getting ready to put out a new letter for my Local and I have lots of references to this site (allthough I used the link MFD because it was simpliest and always googles in the top 3).
Will the open forums still be readable?
I will add the link to the new site but MFD was simple and to the point......

I don't believe that anything is safe from legal challenges these days. Success is relative.

Yes.
I see no reason to be particularly concerned about legal challenges regarding anything on this web site. Judge Beames' order was very specific: We are prohibited from using the domain address www.ufcw.net starting 120 days from the date of her ruling (Nov. 3, 2005). There is nothing in the order that prohibits any other references to the UFCW (that's what the UFCW wanted but didn't get) and the order does not apply to anyone other than the defendants in this case.
I am hopeful that the UFCW has tired of launching foolish legal battles against us and will resist the temptation to do so in the future, knowing as they do that we will not be cowed by their scare tactics and aren't easily fooled with legal talk either.
The domain address for the archive will be announced on both sites as slek has said. People can maybe think of the MFD archive as a library or reading room and the new site uncharted.ca as a place to go to commune with others and get even more up to date stuff.
Best Wishes on the launch of uncharted.
Possibly what happened in the past months just sped the ship up a tad, bigger and better things abound!
