Ontario union leaders 'Big Earners' club

Ontario Union Leaders "Big Earners" Club

The Ontario Ministry of Labour has released its latest union officials' salary disclosure list. Under legislation passed two years ago, unions with offices in Ontario are required to publicly disclose compensation paid to officials whose annual salaries and taxable benefits total $100,000 or more. According to a report in the Toronto Star, the number of Big Earners is up from 260 last year to 299 this year. Among them:

Mark Ortlieb, President of SEIU Local 204 raked in a cool $137,682 last year in salary and taxable benefits. Ray Bartolotti, President of Teamsters Local 938, now in trusteeship, pulled in $112,247. United Brotherhood of Carpenters Executive Director Ed Thornton wasn't far behind at $107,785. United Association Business Manager Joseph Carricato was doin' alright at $104,036.

UFCW Canadian Director Michael Fraser is bringing home the bacon big-time at $154,507. His Executive Assistants Dan Gilbert and David Watts make $114,018 and $109,124 respectively. Other UFCW Big Earners include Local 175 President Wayne Hanley at $145,046, Local 1977 President and inductee in the MFD Trough Brian Williamson at $124, 993, Local 1000a President Kevin Corporon at $146,144 and Joint Northern Council President Robin MacArthur not doing too shabbily at $142,912.

Many mainstream labour leaders in Ontario have been harshly critical of the disclosure legislation.

In Canada, are the CEOs of large corporations required to disclose their salaries to the public for the stockholders to view just as the union officials are? In the US, the Dept. of Labor posts the financial records for unions but there are not any provisions for posting corporate reports. Many in labor state this creates a double standard in the accountability arena!

I can not help but wonder how many other Ontario union officials have found ways to hide the wages of union officials.

Anyone else know of any other union official who should be on the list of the rich and famous union wage list.

Good point teamster
