Strike notice served at Lomans, LRB decision

Strike notice served at Lomans, LRB decision expected today

Workers at Lomans warehouse in Langley BC are awaiting a ruling from the BC LRB that will tell them whether an unusual Memorandum of Understanding their union signed in 1995 gives them the right to strike. The workers are currently under a 10 year collective agreement and would not normally have the right to strike until the agreement expires and negotiations for a new contract reach impasse. Their union, UFCW Local 1518, believes that the MOU gives it the right to unilaterally cancel the contract and commence a strike on 72 hours notice to the employer.

Last month, Local 1518 served notice on Lomans and on Overwaitea Food Group which the union claims is a common employer, of its intention to cancel the contract and commence bargaining. Lomans provides warehousing services for OFG and has advised workers at the Langley warehouse that it will be losing the OFG's business later this year. Approximately 250 workers have been given layoff notices that will become effective in September. OFG has refused to negotiate but some discussoins have taken place between Local 1518 and Lomans which claims it needs concessions.

According to sources at the warehouse, strike notice was served on the company this past Monday. Workers report that a decision from the BC LRB on the issue of their right to strike is expected today.

Thank-you for taking over as the communication channel for UFCW. You do a much better job than the machine. I just checked the "official" site and, as usual, there is nothing about the warehouse since last May 21. So many conventions to go to and so little time. I guess 250 guys is a drop in the bucket to the big machine.

I think you may have gotten the date wrong on the LRB decision. I think it's due no later than Fri. 21 not Fri. 14.

A lot of pissed off people at the warehouse. Remember that some of these guys have over 30 years in. #160 on the seniority list has 18 years.
This is going to be interesting. Stay tuned

The 21st? Damn! MFDs' first retraction.

The ufcw convention seen some of the congregation head on over to a safeway in a symbolic demonstration.

Did anyone from the ufcw or clc convention wave a placard in support of the 250 workers who are losing jobs at the warehouse?

People are talking about a more than symbolic demonstration outside UFCW head office if there is not some recognition that we are ready to rock and roll here and tired of the excuses and delays.

The 21st is not far away and UFCW had better be prepared to take the gloves off after that or I get the feeling they will lose control.

Like I said, this is going to get interesting.
